How the Flipped Classroom Transforms English Lessons

At Innocence Plus English School in Sendai and Suita, we use video-based preparation through the Flipped Classroom approach. By minimizing class time spent on memorization, we maximize the time students spend communicating in English.

What Is a Flipped Classroom?

In this learning style, students watch a short video before class to learn the key expressions and concepts. Then, during class, they focus on output activities based on what they prepared.

Unlike the traditional model—“learn in class and review at home”—the Flipped Classroom shifts part of the input to homework so that class time can be used more effectively.

How It Differs from Traditional Lessons

In many traditional English conversation lessons, teachers introduce new words and grammar during class, students spend time memorizing them, and then practice through homework. This approach limits the time available for using English in real situations.

With our method, students learn the content beforehand through video lessons. This allows them to spend class time speaking, thinking, and expressing themselves in English. Because they have already learned the basics in advance, the lesson with the teacher becomes output-focused, giving students significantly more time to actually use English.

How It Works at Our School

Students first watch the assigned video at home or wherever is convenient, learning the day’s topic, key phrases, and expressions.

On the day of the lesson, they use what they learned through conversation, activities, and presentations with the teacher.

By shifting input to outside the classroom and focusing on output during class, lessons become a place to use English, not just to memorize it.

Benefits of the Flipped Classroom

The biggest advantage is that students can secure ample time to speak and use English during class.

Because they can understand the material at their own pace during preparation, they can focus on applying, expressing, and thinking in English during the lesson.

Lessons become a meaningful space where students experience the feeling of “I can use English.”

This method is especially helpful for children who want to express their ideas in English and for learners aiming to study or work in global environments.

Where It’s Available

The Flipped Classroom approach is available at all campuses in Sendai—Nagamachi, Kamisugi/Kita-Yonbancho, Rokuchonome / Arai, and Aoba-dori Ichibancho—as well as at our Suita/Kandai-mae campus in Osaka.

It works perfectly with our long-standing school culture of “speaking English as soon as you walk in,” maintained for over 10 years.
