From Learning English to Learning Through English — The Power of CLIL

At Innocence Plus English School in Sendai and Suita, students don’t just learn English—they use English to learn. Through CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), children explore history, geography, science, cross-cultural topics, and more in English, building practical language skills alongside knowledge and critical thinking.

What Is CLIL?

CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning, an educational approach in which subjects such as science, history, geography, and culture are studied in English.

In simple terms, it is a learning method where students learn other subjects through English.

Rather than treating English only as a “language,” CLIL positions English as a tool for gaining knowledge, developing analytical skills, and understanding the world.

How We Use CLIL at Our School

At Innocence Plus, students study topics such as world climate zones in English and then present or discuss what they have learned.

By learning science, culture, history, and geography through English, students acquire the language naturally as they engage with content that sparks their curiosity. English becomes not the ultimate goal, but the means to explore ideas, understand new concepts, and express their thinking.

Why CLIL Is Effective

Learning through topics that interest students increases motivation.

As they repeatedly experience using English to learn something meaningful, English becomes connected to real-life applications rather than memorization.

Beyond vocabulary and grammar, students develop the ability to think, understand, and express ideas in English—essential skills for future global settings, international study, and intercultural communication.

CLIL nurtures learners who can use English as a practical tool, not just a school subject.

Who It’s For & Where It’s Offered

CLIL is offered at all of our Sendai campuses—Nagamachi, Kamisugi/Kita-Yonbancho, Rokuchonome / Arai, and Aoba-dori Ichibancho—as well as at our Suita / Kandai-mae campus in Osaka.

CLIL lessons are designed primarily for elementary school students and above, combining theme-based learning with English communication activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can children with lower English levels participate in CLIL?

A: Yes. At our school, CLIL is incorporated from the third elementary-level class. Students first build their foundational skills in the first two levels, and then progress to CLIL. We will recommend the best course for your child, so please feel free to consult us.

Q: What kinds of CLIL topics do you cover?

A: Themes include topics such as world climates, cultural differences between Japan and other countries, and science-based activities using English expressions. We also cover themes connected to the increasingly important Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
