At the Academy, we value science. Science gets kids thinking (hypothesizing using the scientific method) and using their planning and organizational skills.   Doing experiments also teaches a sense of responsibility and leadership skills. I am always surprised to hear that elementary students in Japan don\u2019t start science from the first grade like in other countries. What a loss of potential opportunities to explore the world around them and learn some new and valuable skills! <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Keeping those values in mind, last month we did an experiments with plants. We all know plants need water\u2026but what if the water is contaminated? We grew several cups of grass, but only one was given pure water. The others were fed water mixed with salt, sugar, or vinegar. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u30a4\u30ce\u30bb\u30f3\u30b9\u30d7\u30e9\u30b9\u30a2\u30ab\u30c7\u30df\u30fc\u3067\u306f\u3001\u305d\u308c\u3089\u306e\u30b9\u30ad\u30eb\u3092\u610f\u8b58\u3057\u3066\u3001\u5148\u6708\u306f\u690d\u7269\u3092\u4f7f\u3063\u305f\u5b9f\u9a13\u3092\u884c\u3044\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002<\/p>\n

The pure water grass grew the best, but the grass seeds fed salt water never sprouted. Actually, that one grew mold instead! We followed the growth of the plants over several weeks, taking notes and learning new vocabulary along the way. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Keeping with our plants theme, we also did a short study on carnivorous plants. These plants not only need water, but also can digest insects. For our arts and crafts lesson, we make paper plate \u201cVenus fly trap.\u201d Fun stuff!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
